Six Wig Shops

Digitally printed canvas, 6 panels x 25cmx30cm, 2007
McPherson Gallery and Deptford Design Festival, 2007

In 2005, Deptford High Street came top of the table as the city's most interesting high street. A mathematical formula was devised for Yellow Pages to measure diversity: D = f (m, b, c), where 'm' is a wide mix of businesses, 'b' the availability of everyday goods, and 'c' the presence of a large number of businesses selling the same kind of thing.

A proliferation of wigs and bananas and endless pound shops led to photographic images taken in the high street being given a Warhol makeover, referencing ideas of consumerism, mass production and the glamorisation of everyday objects.

SE8 Signs

Installation, Deptford Design Festival, 2006/7

Digital prints on Corex, 40 x panels, various sizes

As FiveToNine Design Sue Lawes teamed up with Lionel Openshaw (Openshaw Design) to produce temporary alternative street signs with a local slant for the Deptford Design Festival 2006, as part of London Design Festival.

The printed corex designs were installed along Creekside, London SE8. More designs were added the following year for the 2007 festival, as well as directional signs for the festival itself.

Sue produced T-shirts for sale featuring three of the forty signs, and also designed a website for the project which can be viewed at www.se8signs.co.uk
